FAQ

Common questions about living in, moving to, and researching the Dominican Republic. Answers are based on DR Living Index data and expat community input.

Cost of living

How much does it cost to live in the Dominican Republic?
A comfortable expat lifestyle costs between $1,200 and $2,500 USD per month depending on region. Affordable inland towns like Jarabacoa start around $900/mo. Premium beach towns like Punta Cana can run $2,000+ per month. See the full cost breakdown by region.

What is the cheapest region to live in?
Las Galeras, Jarabacoa, and Barahona are the most affordable, with comfortable living from around $800-$1,100/mo. These regions have very limited expat infrastructure and require Spanish for daily life.

Visas and residency

How long can I stay in the DR without a visa?
Most nationalities (US, UK, Canada, EU, Australia) can stay up to 30 days on entry, extendable to 60 days. Overstaying requires paying an exit fee. Long-term stays require formal residency.

What are the residency options?
The main routes are Rentista (passive income $1,500/mo+), Pensionado (pension $1,500/mo+), Inversionista (investment $200k+), and Emprendedor (business). The process takes 6-18 months and costs $1,500-$3,000 with a lawyer. Read the full residency guide.

Safety

Is the Dominican Republic safe?
Safety varies significantly by region. Las Terrenas, Cabarete, Las Galeras, and Jarabacoa are considered safe for expats. Santo Domingo is safe in the right neighbourhoods. Barahona and rural areas are generally safe but remote. Standard travel precautions apply everywhere.

Internet and remote work

Is there good internet in the Dominican Republic?
In major towns and cities, yes. Cabarete, Las Terrenas, Santo Domingo, Santiago, and Punta Cana all have fibre internet. Rural areas rely on Starlink satellite internet. Power outages are common across the DR – a UPS (battery backup) for your router and computer is essential for remote workers.

What is the best region for digital nomads?
Cabarete is the DR’s most established nomad hub with co-working spaces and a large English-speaking community. Las Terrenas is popular for lifestyle quality. Santo Domingo suits nomads who want city infrastructure. Take the quiz to find your best match.

Weather and seasons

When is hurricane season?
June to November, with peak activity August-October. The DR experiences fewer direct hits than flatter Caribbean islands due to its mountainous interior. Most expats describe it as a few weeks of weather vigilance per year rather than months of danger. Read the full hurricane season guide.

What is the best time of year to visit or move to the DR?
December to April is the dry season and peak period for most coastal regions. May-November brings higher rainfall. Jarabacoa has a mild climate year-round. The north coast (Cabarete) gets more rain October-January but remains popular year-round for kitesurfing.
