La Mulata is a predominantly Dominican neighbourhood on the outskirts of Sosúa. Rents are among the lowest in the area, the pace is slower, and the community is more local than the tourist-facing parts of town. Expats who choose La Mulata tend to have been in the DR a while and prefer genuine local life over expat convenience.
La Mulata is not a neighbourhood that markets itself to expats, it just happens to be affordable, close to Sosúa, and genuinely Dominican in character. The expats who live here are typically people who have been in the DR long enough to not need the safety net of an expat community around them.
